Montreal’s Fantasia Film Festival Is Going Virtual This Year

The pandemic has definitely changed the course of all the events (major and minor) that were set to take place this year. Sitting on our couches all day, we want to be a part of these entertainment events now more than ever. Especially with the events that involve being a part of a big crowd such as music festivals, this has been a major set back. A major part of the enjoyment came from the sense of togetherness that was felt by being one with the crowd. With other events such as product and tech launches, however, you could say that this might even be a better alternative. There are a lot of events that earlier could only be attended by a selected few and would be captured on video for the masses to have a second-hand experience.

With all the events being held digitally, you can now attend all the events that you would have otherwise missed, from the comfort of your home. One such event is the Fantasia Film Festival. If it wasn’t for the virtual event, many would’ve never made the time to travel all the way to Montreal to witness it. Where the cancellation of the physical event might be a real downer for some, it has definitely made the festival more accessible to viewers.

For its 24th annual edition, the Montreal based fantasy film festival will be happening virtually from the 20th of August till the 2nd of September. Everything will be scheduled to happen online for all the Canadian viewers to see and participate in. They’ve recently announced the lineup for their first set of screenings, so let’s take a look!

The Reckoning

The festival will open with a screening of “The Reckoning.” This thriller by Neil Marshall is set in the year 1665 and stars Charlotte Kirk, Sean Pertwee, Joe Anderson, Emma Campbell Jones, and Steven Waddington. What makes this film even more horrifying and confrontational is how pertinent it is to today’s circumstances.

Undergods

This screening presents a collection of tales built around the lives of a few men. Their world is turned upside down when they are visited by an unlikely stranger. This film by Chino Moya is sure to transport you to a different world.

Kriya

This film by Delhi based Sidharth Srinivasan takes the viewers through the journey of a DJ who meets an enticing woman at a club. With this encounter, he finds himself in a nightmare of death customs and ritual magic. This is the filmmaker’s first horror narrative in nearly a decade, and it looks like it’s worth the wait.

Shakespeare Sh*tstorm

Lloyd Kaufman is back with an enticing interpretation of “The Tempest.” This film takes eccentricity to a whole new level with musical numbers, action, mutants, and some much-needed steam. It is everything that Shakespeare always dreamed of. It is just the right amount of ridiculousness for the current times.

Sleep

Sleep by Michael Venus explores totalitarianism through the lens of a horror movie. Marlene is tormented by a series of nightmares and can’t shake the feeling that they are true. As she is joined by her teenage daughter, she encounters a horrifying curse disguised as a family secret.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Head to Fantasia’s official website for the complete list of all the exciting films that are going to be featured. There are more titles that are yet to be announced. The final update will be out on the 6th of August, so stay tuned!
