How to Fix Recurring Problems on Google Hangouts
Google Hangouts remains a classic and popular option for many people to connect at work or with their loved ones. Just like any other ordinary app or software, Google Hangouts has its own set of issues. The problems can, however, be solved with a few extra steps and efforts.

Continue reading this article to know how to solve some common problems that all the users across the globe face on Google Hangouts app or extension:
Camera connectivity
Some users mentioned that the camera does not open during the video calls, and the app continuously flashes the “camera is starting” message. If you are using Google Hangouts as a Chrome extension, then try updating the browser to the latest version. Similarly, make sure that your video drivers are also updated. In some cases, Google Chrome has turned out to be the culprit and the best ways to use Hangouts on a desktop will be to use the Microsoft Edge browser.
Audio or video issues
Again this problem also occurs mostly in the Google Chrome browser. One of the most common problems is when the person at the other end cannot hear the users, but the user could listen to them properly. In such cases, some of the extensions that you use could be interrupting Google Hangouts, or you can try to restart the call, but it will only fix the problems on a temporary basis. You can also try switching browsers.
Browser freezing
This one is another common problem that users face while sharing a screen on a video call. All of a sudden, the display of the user freezes, and this disables the user to share their screen. In such cases, there could be a problem in your adaptor or driver, so try updating your drivers. To update it on a window PC,
- Go to the Start option and search for the Device Manager.
- Click on the Display Adaptors and select the Update Driver option.
Green screen
Hangouts also enable you to use a green screen during a call, but for some users, the video gets replaced, and none of the users on the call could see each other. Again, this issue occurs only on computers but there is a solution for this as well.
- Go to Google Chrome and click on the three vertical dots at the top right corner to open the Settings page.
- Scroll down on the page and open Advanced settings.
- Locate and disable ‘Use Hardware Acceleration Where Available.’
If you are using a Chromebook, then:
- Open the Chrome address bar and type ‘chrome://flags’.
- Locate and disable the options for Hardware Accelerated Video Encode.
Unfortunately, if you use a MacBook, there is no solution to this problem for you as the problem has occurred mainly due to the macOS update.
Notifications
A lot of users don’t find any notifications or notification sounds for the messages or calls on Hangouts. This issue is faced by the people who are using the Hangouts Chrome extension as well. If you are using a smartphone for Google Hangouts, then this is how you can fix the notifications:
- On the app, click on the three-lined vertical icon at the top left corner.
- Scroll down the page to go to Settings and click on the account for which you want to tweak the notification.
- When you tap on your account, you will find a Notification section. Now, select Messages and open the Sound settings.
- If the notification sound is set to Default, then open the section and change the alert tone to something you prefer.
- To change the notification sound for incoming calls, follow the same steps until the notification section. From there, select Incoming Calls and make your settings.
Cache data
You are facing issues with troubleshooting, then the best option would be to clear cache and data.
- Open the Settings of your mobile device and go to Apps & Notifications.
- Select All Apps and open Google Hangouts.
- Click on the Storage & Cache option. Then continue to clear the storage and cache sections one by one.
If you are looking forward to clearing the cache and data on Google Chrome then,
- Open the browser and click on the three vertical dots on the top right corner to go to More Tools.
- Select Clear Browsing Data and choose the time range as per your preferences, or select All Time.
- Checkmark the boxes for Cookies And Other Sites and Attached Images And Files
- Click on Clear Data. This will wipe all the cache and data from Hangouts as well as from the Google Chrome browser.
