Ghost of Tsushima: All That It Could Have Been

The open-world melee style Sucker Punch game, Ghost of Tsushima was launched on July 17th to an overall positive reception. The attention to detail given by the makers to make the most believable portrayal of 13th century Japan has been appreciated throughout. As the developers, Sucker Punch, sit down to relax after an overwhelming work month, they open up about the possibilities and probabilities that went with the development of the game.

On the official blog of PlayStation, Brian Fleming, co-founder of Sucker Punch, talks about what could’ve been.

FIRSTLY, WHAT DO YOU THINK OF A PIRATE GAME?

Imagine the game being an-open world pirate style game. The choices you’d have and the adventures you’d go on! But alas, that didn’t happen, and since no official comment on the reason for the discarding of that idea, we assume it was because of Assassin’s Creed’s Black Flag. With that future-conflict incumbent, the team probably had to go and find other avenues. And later they chose feudal Japan.

WHAT ABOUT ONE WITH THREE MUSKETEERS?

After the Pirate idea, for some time there, the team was thinking of a world based on the French novel- Three Musketeers. The three members of the gang are legends in adventure literature and come with their fan-base intact. Plus, their combat style fits perfectly into the world being envisaged by Sucker Punch for the game, close melee fighting with some special powers.

The team also thought about Roby Roy, known as the Scottish Robin Hood, who was an outlaw freedom fighter. The game would take on the adventures of this excellent adventurer and fighter, based on a book from 1818 chronicling his life. But all of these ideas were discarded at some point.

FINALLY, THEY CHOSE 13TH CENTURY JAPAN

As fascinating as an open-world pirate game or three musketeers theme sounded, the final choice is equally, if not more, exciting. A story following a Samurai warrior in feudal Japan, fighting the evil foreign Mongol forces is one for the history buffs. It is well told, well shown, and beautifully captured. It took the team six years to develop the game, and yet the original vision is what brought the team together at all difficult times during the process. The game is a graphically amusing rendition of a piece of Japanese history. It is topped with action-packed adventures and gripping stories.

Ghost of Tsushima is exclusively available for the PlayStation 4.
